Today’s meeting is very special as we have chosen our 2009 Business Person of the Year.
For those of us who live in this community I am sure you have come in contact with him from time
to time and will agree with the Chamber in honoring and recognizing this very deserving
individual. Before we announce his name I would like to share a business success story with you.
The name of the business is the Fairplay Food Store in Hickory Hills. I called Mr. Mike Kozlowski
the Vice President of Fairplay (who by the way is a Southsider) to learn more about the store.
I was informed that Fairplay is a family owned business with seven (7) locations and has been in
the Hill Creek facility for the past seven (7) years. With several locations in the South Suburbs and
Chicago they have also worked with Mayor Daley to open stores in the inner city.
In the past two (2) years sales at the Hickory Fairplay have gone over 150%. The store includes a
large produce, fresh meat and bakery departments along with several aisles of specialty foods.
This store has not only been an asset to our community but it has consistently reached out to
sponsor, assist and support community events unlike other chains in our area.
Personally speaking, I shop at Fairplay not only because they have the freshest vegetables and
great meat counter but because they appreciate the customer.
We salute Mr. Kozlowski and Fairplay for the great store you have and the support you show for
the community. It is the employees that the customers see every day that make your store
someplace they want to come back and shop at week after week. The individual who I will
introduce in a moment is a prime example of the quality of professionals who work for you and
give 200%.
This individual we are honoring today is a perpetual man of motion and integrity. He took on
customer service with a vengeance, changed hiring practices and trained his workers with the
customer in mind. He is always ready to help with a smile on his face and his management skills
and service to others places him in a league of his own.
This individual sets an example by showing leadership in managing a very busy and successful
store while at the same time never forgetting to reach out to the customer with a friendly smile all
the while providing quality service to an appreciative community. For it is these attributes the
customers see every day that make your store the place they want to come back to week after week.
